About This Club

With the help of Jerry Neave and Malcolm Lee, Bob Galfskiy has raised from the dead the old boys’ rifle club. Jerry has kindly agreed to take the post of Chairman and Bob will be the Secretary. Although the old name (Farnham Rifle Club) would have been fitting in many respects, there was the potential for confusion with another local club. Accordingly, the club has plumped for the above name which can be taken as embracing our old club, but with no requirement that members be old boys of the school.

Another Old Farnhamian, Geoff Harnett, has kindly accepted the position of President. The Club will be for Fullbore Target Rifle and will shoot at Bisley. The main aim is to keep down the overheads so that the retired shooting sportsmen and women with any connection to Farnham, are able to enjoy the cheapest possible practice of their sport and recruit youngsters on which to bestow their experience.

The club has become affiliated to the National Rifle Association of Great Britain (the NRA) and has received news that it has agreement in principle from the Home Office to the granting of approval.

Old Farnhamians or residents are welcome to come along for practice or simply to watch. Applications for membership and any enquiries should be addressed to Bob Galfskiy. The club’s own website address is given at the top of this page.  The page will be used for any special matters or messages that relate to the club and the OFA.

Secretary presents father and daughter John &
Zoe Flain with Certificates of Elevation to Full Membership at Bisley Ranges

Many years after Farnham Grammar School became a sixth form college and the subsequent demise of the Old Farnhamians Association Rifle Club, a new Club has risen out of the ashes. Waverley District Rifle Club is the brainchild of former resident of Farnham and Old Boy of the School, Bob Galfskiy, now Honorary Secretary of the Club, with the able assistance of the former President of the Old Farnhamians Rifle Club Jerry Neave, who is Honorary Treasurer of the new Club. Other Officers and Members of the OFA Rifle Club, Malcolm Lee, Geoff Woods and Geoff Harnett, our President and benefactor, have helped to get the new Waverley District Rifle Club off the ground, holding its Inaugural Meeting on April 2nd 2005 at Bisley Ranges where the Club hires its targets from the National Rifle Association of Great Britain (NRA).

The Club is affiliated to the NRA and has been Approved by the Home Office as meeting all the requirements of the Home Office for a Fullbore Rifle Club. This has enabled the Club to run its own Approved Training Course for its Probationary Members and the first real milestone in the life of the Club will be the graduation on July 2nd of its first two students, John Flain and his daughter Zoe, 16, the Club’s youngest Member and one of the most capable as she achieved a score on Saturday 25th June equalling the Secretary’s own of 49 and 5 V-Bulls at a distance of 900 yards, the maximum Possible score being 50. Zoe Flain is a gifted student of the art of rifle shooting – definitely a name to watch in future championships.

Another of the Club’s four lady Members, Sarah Ralston-Good, is showing similar promise, having scored an excellent 47 and 4 V-Bulls on only her second outing, which was at 600 yards. The ladies are proving more than a match for the men!

The Club is open to Membership Applications from residents of Waverley District and particularly Farnham, or with an interest of any sort in Farnham, regardless of their gender, age or physical fitness. Many of our current Members are Old Boys of Farnham Grammar School who were once leading lights in the OFA Rifle Club, one of whom, Bob Kite, drives all the way down from Derbyshire to shoot with us and he very generously presented the Club with a spacious Marquee which we erect behind our firing point at Meetings. Daphne Knowles has donated a camping stove and kettle and regularly keeps us all supplied with tea and coffee. We all ‘muck-in’ to help the Club in any way we can, our Motto being “Keep it Cheap”, self-help being the order of the day. We save a great deal of expense by not owning a Clubhouse and by not paying for NRA markers to operate our targets. We operate our own whenever possible and take the duty in turns. Thanks to our Benefactor, Farnham man Geoff Harnett, the Club owns three rifles and sufficient equipment to allow a squad of three shooters to occupy the firing point at any one time, including shooting mats, spotting telescopes, jackets and slings. Waverley District Rifle Club also has the permanent use of two more rifles which belong to Founder-Members of the Club who make them freely available for Members to use. The Training Programme is free, as is coaching, and we believe we offer the lowest costs of any fullbore Target Rifle Club.

Sadly, as many of you will know from the Obituaries in these pages, Geoff Woods our Founding Honorary Vice President passed away. Geoff did a wonderful job for the Club and is sorely missed.

Bob Galfskiy, who was the Founding Honorary Secretary of the Club, Jerry Neave, who was Founding Honorary Treasurer of the Club, and Malcolm Lee who was our Founding Honorary Captain, after stints in office of more than 5 years, have stepped down to allow 'new blood' a chance to get more involved in the workings of the Club. Geoff Harnett, I'm pleased to say, remains our President and often visits our meetings when he's in the UK (regardless of the weather). Thanks to Geoff the Club owns three rifles, the most recently-purchased of which is equipped with telescopic sights and a rest, for us older chaps whose eyes are a bit dim and elbows too tender these days.

The Training Programme is still free (with the exception of any ammunition you use and an equal share of the target hire) as is your coaching, and we continue to offer the lowest costs of any fullbore Target Rifle Club.

Those who would like to know more about the Club or to apply for Membership should please Email Bob Galfskiy on bob.galfskiy@gmail.com giving their Full Name, Date of Birth and Full Postal Addresses covering the previous five years, and I will be delighted to forward your email to our new Secretary, Dave Clarke, who is not an Old Boy but is keen an efficient, not to mention a pretty fair shot.
