Held
at Ewshot on 19th June 2010
It took a while to organize but it was worth it! seemed to be the verdict as
approximately 75 Old Boys and Old Girls from Farnham’s two Grammar Schools
ended a pleasant afternoon of nostalgia in the garden of the Webmaster. The
idea was first floated approximately 2 years ago when it was pointed out that
the old boys and old girls very rarely had any joint activities even though
they were two very active associations.
Cyril Trust started the ball rolling
and, to cut a longish story short, it happened. The weather was fine, though
slightly chilly for June, the catering arrangements made by various members
were excellent and uncharacteristic attention to the needs of the garden by the
webmaster (who was terrified by the prospect of a visit by so many old friends and
colleagues with serious horticultural credentials) all paid off.
There were no speeches of any
consequence, but there was much animated talk and chatter. A large cake,
appropriately decorated, was cut to celebrate this defiant act of unsupervised
encounter between the old pupils of the two schools, something that would have
been impossible in the old days. But there were several married couples present
to attest to the fact that such defiance had succeeded on a one-to-one basis
even back then!
It was generally agreed to have been a
successful experiment and the kind of event to be repeated.
