Old Farnhamians' Association

FGS Production
of
Amahl and the Night Visitors

In March 1956, FGS staged an historic production of Gian-Carlo Menotti’s opera at The Church House, Farnham. This was well received in Farnham and widely acclaimed. The composer himself took an interest in the fact that his opera had received its first UK production and made a visit to Farnham later in the year to see a special Gala Performance that was staged for his benefit. In a speech after the performance, he poured great praise on the production and said that he hoped, one day, to write an opera especially for the school. Unfortunately, this was never accomplished, but the production remained one of the most notable musical achievements of Alan Fluck and helped to mark out the school as a centre of musical innovation.

The photographs below are contributed by Julia Wilson (née Beeken), who played the key female role of Amahl’s mother.
