THE GRANDFATHER CLOCK IS HOME AGAIN

The long case clock has been refurbished and is once again back at Menin Way where it had stood for many years, holding a special place in the memories of former pupils of Farnham Girls’ Grammar School. Prefects remember ringing the school bell, for the end of lessons, by the time on the grandfather clock. Other pupils recall being sent to stand by it, when they had transgressed, hoping the headmistress would not see them and inflict further punishment.

At the Annual General Meeting of the FGGS Old Girls’ Association, in September 2004, it was agreed that the money from the Miss Mary Eggar Memorial Fund should be put towards the cost of repairing the clock and would be a fitting memorial to a much loved teacher, OGA President and Chairman, who died on 16th October 2002, aged 100 years. Please see the special tribute for an account of the life of this truly remarkable lady.

The Memorial fund is still open for those who would like to make a donation.

HILARY MEMORIAL SEAT

This wooden seat, on view at the Reunion in September 2004, was purchased with money from the Memorial Fund, set up in memory of Hilary Earl (nee Newitt) who died on 7th February 2001, aged 62 years. As well as a pupil at FGGS, leaving in 1955, Hilary, who wrote ‘The Story of a School’, a history of Farnham Girls’ Grammar School, was Editor of the OGA Newsletter and the Old Girls’ section of the school magazine for 35 years. She was also Clerk to the Governors of Farnham College and wrote a history for the first 25 years of the College.

The Annual General Meeting agreed the wording for a plaque to be attached to the seat, which will be placed in the Quad at Menin Way for the children of South Farnham School to enjoy.
