After the special 75th dinner at Farnham Castle in 2007, this year’s event was back to normal. No less enjoyable as the main pleasure arises from encountering old friends from schooldays, some of whom you expect to see and others whose appearance is an unexpected surprise.

There were 90 old boys and staff who turned up to enjoy a meal that was well catered by the college kitchen. The assembly stood in memory of the old boys who have passed on since the last event – this sadly included several names that had certainly not been considered as imminent candidates for the afterlife the last time we saw them at the dinner.

The association has a new president following the ending of Cyril Trust’s period of office. Brian Williams (1960 – 1965) presided and thanked the association for honouring him with the appointment. Mike Mehta proposed the toast to the school delivering it in an imitation of Alistair Darling’s budget speech with many references to how a well-structured school should be organised (reminiscent of the FGS model). Tony Rayer spoke of the joy of meeting old friends and made some dryly delivered jokes that gave great amusement.

This was another memorable evening where memories were jogged into recalling some very happy days, as well as some traumatic ones, no doubt. Everybody leaves these dinners feeling that strange mixture of joy and sadness that we call nostalgia.
